#13 What Now

Now that the rush of Challenge Day, Stair Climb, and Hallowe'en is over,  I believe it is time to start a long term project. We all got involved in the Grade 12 Leadership to get involved and make a difference. I think we start something that the school can carry on for other years.

Peer to Peer Drug Training:
This is an increasingly alarming problem at IDCI. I think it's time we start actually doing something about it. Lets start our project by having our class of 18 divided into 3 groups of 6 people. Each of those 3 groups will go to a class (preferably 1P) and start 'counselling'.
I still stand by what I said at Independent that we should kick this thing off by having the Statistic Fake-Death thing where we take random pre-determined kids from classes according to statistics (e.g.. 1/30 kids die from snorting crack and then we steal one kid from each class.) (e.g.. or we have an assembly where predetermined kids come up from the audience to the stage and we announce why they left the group on the ground )

A Little Something in the Air... (<-- sorry ahaha thats always on Sims when they talk about garbage)
So the garbage problem in IDCI hallways is getting ridiculous. We should have either more recycling bins or garbage bins put out. We should also have some class do a weekly-garbage-sweep where they clean the hallways or a hallway every week.

Personally:
Personally I would like to see Student Parliament take a larger part in the school as we have been fairly inactive. We all have great plans/ideas so I think I/We should take more leadership in Parliament and 'Step up to the Plate'.

Colour Houses:
With the go-ahead from Chelsea, I would love to see the Colour House idea take off. I think it should be Parliament run with the help of leadership though (Sorry to be segregating parliament from leadership :s). I also think we should wait for Chelsea to come back. But we should move forward with it none the less.

#6 So Two Guys Wanted the Same Job...

So, while I'm writing this post, every other commercial on TV is for the American Federal Election (I know this one's late too *sigh*).

I'll just come out and say it: I'm a closet Republican.

I have followed American politics ever since Obama was elected in 2008. Although I was not a fan of President Bush, I favour the Republican Party.

Mitt Romney is a good public speaker with tons of American spirit. He is a walking stereotype of "Americans". He has slipped up a few times in public at parties about his platform but he still shows a lot of spirit and 'Americanism'.

Obama was left with a huge debt in 2008 from Bush. I believe he can fix the debt crisis eventually, but, we need out of this recession soon. On Romney's platform, he is encouraging large businesses and capitalism by reducing their amount of taxes. I believe this will get more large businesses started and funded and drive up the economy in America.

According to statistics, the American economy was highest while a Republican was President. This holds true for much of history. The largest problem right now is the recession so lets stop it and move on. As explained above, the Republican platform will drive up the economy so lets solve the debt crisis and vote Republican!

-Sincerely the very Republican, Colin Shelton

#3 Thanksgiving

I know I sort of missed the bus on this one, but, I will make it as what we should do for next year and what worked from this year.

Again, I liked the idea of having a Thanksgiving Week. The idea of having events held everyday in the cafeteria to have fun and get involved was good. We had a great Grade Nine turn out which was really good for getting them involved for future events (such as Stair Climb). I believe their is a faint connection between participating in fun games at lunch and attending sports events and spirit days. Ahaha. I also liked having the turkeys on the wall, although for next year we should think of a clean up solution as they were thrown on the ground this year.

For next year, I believe we should connect the pie to the turkeys. "Get a Free Slice of Pie, If you find a turkey with a logo on it". I also think we should have more large group games or activities. I know its hard to do and challenging (like the paper turkeys) but it always has a great turn out.

Sorry its late!

#2 Ken Robinson Talks: Do Schools Kill Creativity?

I will start off this report by saying what a wonderful public speaker Ken Robinson is. He is very comedic and he is not afraid to discuss large and complicated topics, such as a faulty education system. I also have to completely agree with him.

Ken Robinson is completely right by saying "Schools Kill Creativity". I can connect thoroughly with many of his points. One of them was that school systems, no matter where you are, treasure mathematics and sciences more deeply than the arts (dance, drama and music). (Just compare IDCI's new Science Department to our Musical Theatre Program. Oh wait! We don't have one...)

Robinson also discussed how as more of the population gets educated, the more meaningless a University Degree is. I can agree with this as I have never thought about getting a job when everyone is educated. In 50 years or somewhere down the road, students will need to go to school for 10 years just to get a decent job in an office. I am personally not willing to go to school for 5-10 years just to get a degree in the field that presently takes 2-4 years.

Robinson also makes a very good point when he says people learn differently. When I participated in the High School Project this past summer, I met many students who are dancers. Many of them had the opportunity to attend arts schools such as HB Beal or the Royal Ballet School of Ontario. I can connect with Robinson's story about the choreographer of The Phantom of the Opera and Cats. I can predict that my friends will be much more successful at their arts schools as opposed to public high schools due to how they learn.

Robinson is right in saying we need to change our educational values and our education system.

#4 Two Weeks until Challenge Day and...

I belive that follwing Challenge Day this year, we should have a goal. At Challenge Day (at the end of the day) the administrators should tell all the students that participated that they have to watch for bullying and give ten compliements a day (an example). I know it wont last forever but at least it is making Challenge Day not just a day, but a week or a few weeks.

In the school, we should also hang up the Challenge Day posters as well as quotes about bullying. They do not have to big and not everywhere but at least a few should go up. This will remind people that participated in Challenge Day that it lasts longer than one day.

#1 "Before I Die Wall"Article

I believe that the "Before I DieWall" is a great idea for IDCI. I believe that we (the Leadership class) could change the meaning from 'Before I Die' to 'Before I Graduate' or something like that. The concept of the Wall is a great idea that I totally support. I think we could have it in a hallway near the front where a lot of people pass by.

I think that people will be less likely to write inapproprioate comments if we get other people writing on it early. So we make a few comments already on it so less people think of it as a joke.

I also think we should associate it with Twitter. Like " #BeforeIGraduate I want to pass my classes with 99%."
